St. Bernard Fire Station No. 11
Location: St. Bernard Parish, LA
Client: St. Barnard Fire Department
"To me, the intangibles are what make this station noteworthy. . . . In a community decimated by a natural disaster that has forever changed peoples lives--this station is a testimony [to] community resilience and belief in the future. The fire department once again fulfills its role, first on the scene. The station's avant-garde style, perhaps off-putting to some, uses the design vocabulary of its immediate waterfront setting to both blend in and stand out. A worthy achievement by itself. I imagine this modestly scaled building, boldly styled for the future--not the past--actually helps people sleep at night. When it comes to the design of a fire station, I can't think of a higher accomplishment." -- Paul Erickson, Fire Chief Magazine Station Style Judge, 2010
